VET First Grade College has emerged as a hub of quality education through its teaching- learning processes, competent faculty, and committed efforts on research & innovation having a tangible impact on societal development. The journey has been quite challenging yet very successful. The college is offering discipline core courses on B.Com, B.Sc FAD, BCA and BBA which is a reflection of multidisciplinary aspect in commerce, management, computers and science (fashion). Our Institution’s vision articulates our aspirations to emerge as a highly respected multidisciplinary with student centric approach together with the support and dedicated efforts of all the stakeholders.

The College envisages creating centres of excellence for providing knowledge, education, training and research facilities of high order in the field of science, commerce, management, arts and other related professional. The College plans to strengthen all on-going programmes within the framework provided by the Bengaluru City University, by way of participation in curriculum enrichment, offering a variety of elective courses, modernizing the labs for experiential learning, adding high calibre faculty members and promoting the culture of research and innovation.

The pedagogical practices are designed in such a way that self-learning skills are inculcated among the students so that they become lifelong learners, who can effectively face the challenges of an unpredictable future to establish linkage with the industry to make teaching, research and training at the College relevant to the needs of the economy, at national and global level. The college offer programs in the varied fields with a special focus on a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary curriculum. Faculty members from disciplines of great diversity work independently on common problems, looking at it from their own perspectives. The findings from each discipline are supplementary to each other. There is knowledge sharing among various faculties and departments, bringing different perspectives to bear on each other.

Outcome:

B.Com students have opted Psychology, Fashion, Computers and Physical Education as open elective and B.Sc FAD and BCA students have opted Management, Psychology and Physical Education as open elective. Also, students choose these courses by exercising their choice through Google forms.

Academic bank of credits (ABC):

The college promotes the academic bank of credit – a national level facility that promotes the flexibility of the curriculum framework and multidisciplinary academic mobility of students across the higher education through the support of Bengaluru City University rightly supported by State Government. Under Academic Bank of credit, student credits for a particular program from an institution may be transferred / redeemed by another institution upon students consent when student wants to continue the education in another institution. Students are also having an exit option after two semesters – Certificate, 4 semesters – diploma, 6 semesters – degree and 8 semesters – Honors are awarded. This is an innovative idea to earn and deposit credit through National schemes like SWAYAM, NPTEL, COURSERA. This digital learning is encouraged among the students as an initiative of NEP2020 which shall be considered for credit transfer and accumulation in this provision.

A digital learning portal is embedded in the college website for facilitating students. Similarly entry option is also flexible under NEP 2020 using academic bank of credit. Under the current system, students may take up the transfer from one college to another college by producing NOC and University approval, readmission provision is also available to the students and students who have completed 3 years Diploma from Government of Karnataka, Department of Technical Education may join 2nd year B.Com, B.Sc FAD under General education and Engineering under Technical education.

The objectives of ABC in this Institution is to promote student-centric education, focus on student friendly teaching approaches, implement an interdisciplinary approach, allow students to learn the best courses of their interest and enable students to learn at their own pace. The institution has urged all the students to register for their ABC and open their accounts that will enable students to have multiple options for entering / leaving the college. A digital learning portal links are embedded in the college website for facilitating students. By these students will able to earn credits and get programs completed.

Outcome:

98% of students of our college have registered to ABC

Skill Development

Skills are integrated into the regular Programmes offered in the institution. Skills relevant to academic and professional life like decision-making, problem solving, information gathering, critical thinking, confidence building, self-awareness, positive thinking, active listening, persuasion and networking skills are imbibed in students through experiential learning, club activities, industry and field visits, projects and dissertations, short term courses in collaborations with AISECT, NICT, IOTA, and digital platforms like Infosys Spring board and IIT Bombay.

Students prepare mini project works on the topics like Yoga, health and wellness and enhance their skills practically. Also faculty members assign 5 skill development activities for each of the core courses thereby imbibing experiential learning among the students which is documented in the blue books maintained by the students. Due to sector shifts taking place in the Indian employment market the need for significantly different and specialist skill sets are on the rise. Training in soft skills, personality development, computing skills, etc. is provided to students.

Courses on Personality development, science and society, environment studies, Value education helps students to become more responsible, helps them to understand the different perspectives of life in a better way and paves way to be a responsible citizen and develop a strong relationship with family and friends.

Student participation in NSS, Rotract and other social welfare initiatives like rallies, swatch campus abhiyan, plantation activities, and many other events of regional and national importance help in moulding them as intellectually competent, morally upright, socially committed citizens of tomorrow. The initiatives teaches life skills like personal values, family values, equality, empathy, ethics, social responsibility, personality development and life enhancement skills.

Outcome:

99% of students have completed Certification courses, 42% of students have completed Projects and Internships at Corporates, NGOs.

Appropriate integration of Indian Knowledge system (teaching in Indian Language, culture, using online course)

Indian culture needs to be supported and conserved for future generations through systematic dissemination of information about culture, history, arts, languages, and traditions through our education system. Cultural awareness and expression are among the major competencies considered important among students as it provides them with a sense of identity, belonging, as well as an appreciation of other cultures and identities.

At the College, teaching in the bilingual (Kannada/English) mode is encouraged wherever possible, conducting more experiential Kannada language learning, inviting outstanding local artists, writers, crafts persons, and other experts as master instructors in various subjects of local expertise are other ways in which knowledge of Indian culture is promoted. The Indian languages which are taught are Kannada, Hindi and Sanskrit. These are taught in depth. Also, there is provision for learning other Indian languages like Tamil, Telegu, Urdu and Malayalam. Indian Culture and its expressions are encouraged through creative writing, poetry and drama and also through club activities of “Spotlight Club” including celebration of Kannada Rajothsava and Hindi Divas. It is also proposed to bring in greater flexibility in the curriculum, so that students can choose the ideal balance among courses for themselves to develop their own creative, artistic, cultural, and academic paths.

The Departments of Kannada, Hindi and English have taken numerous initiatives to promote the awareness and appreciation of Indian culture through organisation of various activities and programs like pick and speak, essay writing, presentations, debate and many more.

Outcome:

The college organised One Day State level seminar on "Vachanagalu Matthu Samakaalina Badhuku", One Day Seminar on "Janapada Geethegalalli Jeevana" and Legal Awareness Program- Kannunu Arivu Neravu Karikrama in 2018, National Level webinar on Hindi Language and National Integration in 2020

Focus on Outcome based education (OBE):

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is a student-centric teaching and learning methodology in which the course delivery, assessment are planned to achieve stated objectives and outcomes. It focuses on measuring student performance i.e. outcomes at different levels. The institution encouraged the faculty to participate in numerous orientation programs, seminars, workshops and webinars to update themselves on various aspects of outcome based learning.

The CO, PO, PSO are prepared jointly by Principal, HODs and Coordinators jointly in consultation with faculty handling the particular course and also considering the outcomes given by the University. The institution has integrated OBE in the Lesson Plan, formative and summative assessments are taken care of by setting the question paper based on Bloom’s Taxonomy.

The Institution also ensures to consider innovative, teaching practices like experiential learning, service, learning, field visits, and collaborative programs. Unit / Internal test is carried out for assessing the outcomes. Career and Placement cell arranges for various career counseling and competitive examination programs. Based on the interest of the students, students are trained and campus drives are arranged on and off the campus. College is Wi-Fi enabled and classrooms are equipped with ICT facility. Library resources – Paper backs and digital support the learning outcomes among students.

The college encourages students to participate in short-term certificate courses, seminars, field trips, industrial visits, internships, placements, orientations, and other activities to gain practical experience. In addition to University curriculum, add on skills like personality development, ICT skills, soft skills, communication and language skills are imbibed among students through Language Lab and other Industry-Academia collaboration.

Outcome:

Securing University Ranks, Good number of placements and students progressing for higher education.

Distance education/online education:

The college follows curriculum prescribed by the Bengaluru City University. Therefore, extending distance / online education is not permissible by the University. However, the college enhances the students’ skill apart from University curriculum through virtual/online learning using platforms like Infosys Springboard, IIT Bombay, Stock Byte, AISECT-NSDL (blended mode of learning), Language Lab among others. M.Com students have undertaken MOOC courses on SWAYAM NPTEL platform.

Various ICT tools like Google form, Zoom, Microsoft teams, Campus Element are used as base for innovative teaching learning practice. During Covid 19 Pandemic, classes were connected uninterruptedly using Zoom and Microsoft Teams platform and this practice continues till date for conducting webinars and parent teacher interactions. Due to University curriculum mandate, the option of distance / online education remains unexplored other than above mentioned pedagogical teaching.
